Mirror as a material is so compelling and magical. It adds excitement and movement to a mosaic, reflects light, and even reflects the maker and the viewer.

It’s pretty special. Mirror has been an essential component in my own work for over 30 years. It’s what drew me to mosaics!*

Have you wanted to add mirror to your own mosaic projects but are not quite sure about the best ways to select, prepare and use it?

Have you wondered about all the conflicting information about how you should and shouldn’t use mirror in your work?

The key to using mirror successfully in a mosaic project is understanding and incorporating best practices.

Join me for this special session during which I’ll teach you how to do this through demonstrations, lecture and hands-on practice.

In this 2-hour training session I’ll share best practices and walk you through…

  • The different types of mirror available for use in both art and architectural projects. We’ll discuss mirror of differing thicknesses, mirror used in decorative mosaics, and mirror used in the building trades.

  • Presentation of a fabulous array of mirror in many colors and surface qualities with pro tips about how to select mirror for your project.

  • Where to source mirror for interior and exterior use in mosaics.

  • How to select, prepare, and set mirror to prevent de-silvering -- including what not to do!

  • A series of demonstrations including various cutting and shaping techniques for mirror, using both glass and ceramic tools.

  • Selecting the right adhesive for your mirror mosaic projects.

In this interactive clinic, I’ll answer your questions about durability, longevity, and integrity mirror in various environments.

I’ll present several specialty tools for cutting and shaping mirror including the European Zag Zag, several varieties of scoring tools and pliers, as well as tools commonly used in glass mosaics.

In addition, I’ll be including hands-on lessons for creating thin bars and “french fry” shapes with both thin and thick mirror, cutting curved shapes, and creating smooth edges without a grinder. I will teach you how to avoid the jagged or chewed edged look that can come from (over) using a wheeled nipper and how to avoid chips and undercuts. We’ll also talk about how to hold your body, how to hold your tools, and how to use your non-dominant hand to ensure more precision in your cutting, while creating less waste.

Finally, I’ll be offering some of my signature lessons on setting mirror and mirror piecework. I’ll also offer visual examples of different approaches and show how small errors can lead to visual awkwardness.

Signature lessons include:

  • Creating sexy line-work with mirror

  • Creating graceful swirls and curves

  • Keystoning

  • Using mirror in the abstract fitted still

Note: This is a skill-building clinic. Students will not make a personal art piece to take home.

*Special thanks to my mentor, artist Isaiah Zagar, master of mirror mosaic. I was compelled to reach out to Isaiah after seeing his mirror mosaics in 1990 after which I did an apprenticeship with him. The rest is history.
