Mosaics with Recycled Materials:
Exploring Texture

Students will explore ideas around using what’s available to create meaningful art, and how to use mosaic as a technique for exploring combinations of diverse materials.

In this afternoon workshop students will create a unique mosaic piece to take home using reclaimed, salvaged, found and recycled materials. Class will cover project design, how to effectively combine materials for interesting textural effects, adhesives and tool use.

Workshop will also cover:

  • Sourcing and gathering materials

  • Working with prompts to create a compelling design

  • Preparing a surface/ object to receive mosaic

  • Environmental constrains for certain materials

A selection of objects and surfaces to work on will be provided, or students can bring their own with consent of instructor.

There will be lots of materials to experiment with including: second run and used ceramic tile, scrap stained glass, architectural glass, mirror, dishes and pottery, metal objects and hardware, bottle caps, sea glass, slag glass, bottles and salvaged glass, discards from professional glass studios, stone, marble and more.

Students are welcome to bring additional materials to work with.
